Sustainable tourism in the Dyfi Biosphere

26 Feb 2009

Tourism is a very important part of the Dyfi valley economy. Much of the appeal of the area is based on its natural and cultural assets, backed by expertise and community interest in sustainable living. The anticipated re-listing of the whole valley as a UNESCO Biosphere area presents opportunities to build on its reputation for excellence.

Ecodyfi has been helping tourism businesses collaborate with public sector tourism interests for several years. The Dyfi Valley Tourism Growth Area initiative stimulated product development, for example in mountain biking and wildlife watching. When this ended in early 2008, those concerned turned their attention to marketing. Tourism Partnership Mid Wales matched local financial contributions and an agency devised a campaign based around www.lyfidyfi.com.

At the end of 2008 the group decided it wished to expand and to become the tourism dimension of the Dyfi Biosphere process. To this end, it has drafted criteria for participation/membership that reflect the aims and vision of the Biosphere. The basic requirement is for the business concerned to commit to supporting this vision and to improve its operation in such areas as waste management, local purchasing and promotion of local heritage.

Members will also be invited to join one or both of two formal accreditation systems, Green Dragon and the Green Business Tourism Scheme. Both encourage progression through several levels of achievement. If the Dyfi Biosphere Partnership approves and promotes this link, it could become a model for other types of business.
