In October 2008, Mike Bailey and Andy Rowland hosted a field trip by sixth form geography students from North Devon. They were from West Buckland School, which has formed a partnership with several state schools local to them. They were investigating and comparing the North Devon and Dyfi Biosphere Reserves.
As well as seeing Ynyslas, Cors Fochno and examples of solar technologies in use in Machynlleth, the students met Iestyn Thomas of Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust at Glaslyn. The Trust is trying out innovative ways to improve the ability of peat uplands to store carbon and to retain flood waters longer.
In December 2008, Andy Rowland assisted Hambrey Consulting in the North Norfolk Coast Biosphere Reserve. They had been commissioned to review all UK Biospheres by the UK Government, at UNESCO’s request.
The situation in North Norfolk is similar to that of the Dyfi ten years ago, in that the designation is completely dormant. Key stakeholders were interested to hear about the engagement process in the Dyfi and will consider whether they want to do something similar there.
