Schools, volunteers and wildlife enthusiasts in the Dyfi valley are celebrating their achievements, carried out over the winter with assistance from the Dyfi Biosphere initiative.
The Welsh Assembly Government’s Department for Environment, Sustainability and Housing allocated £20,000 for activities that related to either nature conservation or climate change.
28 applications were approved, though one of these was not taken up in the end.
Here are some examples of the completed projects:
Machynlleth Golf Club commissioned an energy report and insulated the loft space in its club house so as to reduce energy wastage. The Club went on to use European and UK Government funding to install solar water heating and solar electricity as well – further reducing its contribution to climate change.
Cylch Feithrin Corris, Machynlleth Children’s Nursery, Ysgol Machynlleth and Ysgol Pennal all created gardens or wildlife areas outside to conserve nature, encourage wildlife and increase biodiversity, also carrying out educational and awareness raising activities with the children.
Several projects involved planting hedges with native species to attract and shelter wildlife and some involved nest boxes and other habitat work. One grant enabled the initiation of the Nature and Conservation Volunteer Group, which intends to be active throughout the Dyfi Biosphere area.
