World Congress of Biosphere Reserves Madrid 2008

19 Feb 2008

From the Dyfi valley to Madrid

Representatives from the Dyfi Biosphere area recently participated in a major review of one of the UN’s main mechanisms for encouraging sustainable development. The congress in Madrid was a huge meeting, and a good learning experience.

“Biosphere Reserves” are areas in which people work to balance the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use. They are recognised by UNESCO as being flagship communities, trying to build vibrant economies based on rich natural assets, while also safeguarding local culture.

Mike Bailey, Senior Reserve Manager of the Dyfi NNNR, and Andy Rowland, Manager of ecodyfi, both travelled to Madrid for this landmark congress. They were acting on behalf of the partnership that is asking UNESCO to enlarge the area of the Dyfi Biosphere. Dr Ioan Fazey of Aberystwyth University also took part.

While most discussions focused on preparing the official Madrid Action Plan, to guide the development and coordination of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, Andy commented that the most valuable part of the event was informal exchange with other “grass roots” workers.
